DOT accreditation is an official recognition given by the Philippine Department of Tourism to tourism enterprises that comply with the minimum standards for the operation and maintenance of tourism facilities and services.

This certification assures tourists that the accredited establishment meets the necessary safety, hygiene, and service standards.

Who needs a DOT Accreditation in the Philippines

In the Philippines, it is mandatory for certain types of tourism enterprises to obtain accreditation from the Department of Tourism (DOT). These enterprises are classified into two main categories: Primary Tourism Enterprises and Secondary Tourism Enterprises.

A. Primary Tourism Enterprises

The primary tourism enterprises are directly related to tourism and are required to obtain DOT accreditation:

  • Accommodation Establishments: If you plan on starting a resort business in the Philippines or other accommodation establishments such as hotels, apartment hotels, and various types of Mabuhay accommodations such as tourist inns, motels, pension houses, and bed and breakfast establishments, you must obtain DOT Accreditation.
  • Travel and Tour Services: This category encompasses travel and tour agencies, travel agencies, tour operators, and online travel agencies.
  • Tourist Transport Operators: These include tourist land, water, and air transport operators, as well as motorized bancas.
  • Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE): MICE organizers and facilities/venues fall under this category.
  • Adventure/Sports and Ecotourism Facilities: Facilities that provide adventure and ecotourism experiences.
  • Tour guides and other personnel directly interacting with tourists

Secondary Tourism Enterprises

These enterprises are related to tourism but are not directly involved in tourism activities. Accreditation for these enterprises is voluntary:

  • Tourism-related Enterprises: This includes restaurants, tourism training centers, target shooting ranges, department stores, shopping malls, tourist shops, specialty shops, farm tourism camps, galleries/museums, tourism entertainment complexes, tourism recreation centers, zoos, rest areas/restrooms, and surfing camps.
  • Health and Wellness Services: Such as ambulatory clinics, spas, and tertiary hospitals.
  • Tourism Frontliners: This includes tourism trainers and surfing instructors.
