This is a preliminary check, not the DBD. The Department of Business Development makes the final decision case by case during registration. For a high-stakes name, a regulated sector, or anything close to a known brand, have our Bangkok team review it before you file.
What makes a name pass

How a company name passes the DBD

Thailand's company-name rules are set by the Department of Business Development (DBD), under the Ministry of Commerce, and applied when you reserve a name. Every later step, from your registration to your bank account, chains off an approved name.

01

Required Limited suffix

A private limited company name must end with Limited or Co., Ltd. to show its limited liability status, under Section 1098 of the Civil and Commercial Code. A public company uses Public Company Limited.

02

Unique and distinct

The name cannot be identical, or confusingly similar, to a company already registered, checked against the DBD database in both Thai and English. Similar names are allowed only when a distinct word sets them apart, such as ABC Holdings Ltd and ABC Trading Ltd.

03

No prohibited or restricted words

A name cannot copy a government ministry or agency, imply royal patronage, mislead about what the company does, or be obscene. Some words are barred by law, such as investment, while related words like capital are allowed.

04

Thai-language reservation

Even if your name is in English, it must also be reserved and registered in Thai script. If the name includes Thailand, it must appear in brackets at the end, such as ABC Co., Ltd. (Thailand).

05

Clear and easy to read

The name should be straightforward and easy to pronounce in Thai, avoiding overly complex words that could be misread once transcribed.

Common slip-ups we catch

Patterns that get a name held up

From the names we reserve and register with the DBD for clients. Each one is easy to spot once you know the pattern.

Pattern 1 · Identical or confusingly similar

A name that matches an existing company in the DBD database, in Thai or English, is rejected. Differentiate with a distinct word rather than a small spelling change.

Pattern 2 · Missing the Limited suffix

A private limited company name that does not end with Limited or Co., Ltd. is not accepted.

Pattern 3 · Restricted word

Using investment, a ministry or agency name, or anything implying royal patronage holds the name up. Capital is allowed where investment is not.

Pattern 4 · English only, no Thai reservation

Reserving only the English name and skipping the Thai-script version is a common miss; both are required.

Pattern 5 · Too complex to transcribe

A name that is hard to pronounce or transcribe into Thai can be queried, since the Thai version must read clearly.

Registry search

How to search the Thai company registry

Thailand's company registry is maintained by the Department of Business Development (DBD), under the Ministry of Commerce. The DBD's online database, the DBD DataWarehouse, is the official source for company status, type, directors, registered capital, and address.

This tool searches that registry in English. Type a company name, or part of one, or a registration number, and it returns matching companies with their registration number, type, status, and registered address. The same search checks a brand-new name against the rules above, so you can confirm availability and run a company verification in one place. Once your name clears, our company registration in Thailand service files it with the DBD.

Checking a name is free. For due diligence or an acquisition, you can order a full company report through Companies House Thailand, delivered within one business day.

Looking to buy or check a Thai company? We pull the full report and walk you through what it means, delivered within one business day. Get a company report.

Common questions

Company search questions

What people ask before checking a name or ordering a report.

Is the Thailand company name check free?

Yes. Checking whether a company name is available is free. A full company report on an existing company is paid and delivered within one business day.

How long is a company name reservation valid?

A DBD name reservation is valid for 30 days from approval, with no extension, so you must register the company within that window.

How do I search the Thai company registry?

Type a company name, part of a name, or a registration number into the tool. It searches the DBD's records and returns matching companies with their registration number, type, status, and registered address.

Can I search by company registration number?

Yes. You can look up a company by name or by its 13-digit registration number, which the DBD assigns at incorporation.

What should I do if my proposed name is rejected?

Submit an alternative. It helps to file up to three name options at once, so the DBD can approve the first that clears and you avoid a repeat round.

Are there language requirements for company names in Thailand?

Yes. Even an English name must be reserved and registered in Thai script. If the name includes Thailand, it appears in brackets at the end, such as ABC Co., Ltd. (Thailand).

Is registering a company name the same as trademarking it?

No. A company name is registered with the DBD, while a trademark is protected separately under the Trademark Act. Clearing one does not clear the other.

Can foreigners use the company search?

Yes. Anyone can check name availability or order a report on an existing Thai company, wherever they are based.
