To legally play music in a public setting, businesses typically need to obtain licenses from all three organizations:

• Music Authors’ Copyright Protection (MACP) – protects the rights of songwriters and music publishers. It allows for the public performance and broadcasting of musical works, ensuring that songwriters receive royalties when their compositions are used commercially.
• Public Performance Malaysia (PPM) – Focuses on the rights of music producers. It permits the public performance of sound recordings, including music videos and karaoke, thus allowing businesses to play recorded music legally.
• Performer’s Rights Management (RPM) – Represents performing artists. It protects their rights by allowing for the public performance of their recorded works and ensures they receive compensation for such performances.

How to Obtain a Music License in Malaysia

Along with the needed documents and application form, establishments also need to pay a fee based on the venue size and audience capacity. A minimum of RM750 (~USD 170) for the first 2,000 sq ft with an additional RM0.248 (USD~0.6) per sq ft.
