Overview
What is the spouse KITAS?
The spouse KITAS, index E31B, is the limited stay permit for the legally married husband or wife of a foreigner who holds a KITAS or KITAP. Your spouse lives in Indonesia with you, enters and leaves freely on a multiple entry permit, and stays for the same period as your own permit.
It’s valid for 1 or 2 years in most cases — the same as the principal KITAS — and renewed alongside it. The 5- and 10-year versions are only available where the principal holds a long-term permit such as a Golden Visa. Children under 18 get their own dependent permit, the E31E, on the same basis.
Married to an Indonesian citizen? That’s a different visa. The E31B covers spouses of foreign KITAS and KITAP holders. The spouse of an Indonesian citizen applies for the E31A, sponsored by the Indonesian spouse, with its own path to permanent residence after two years of marriage.

A spouse KITAS doesn’t allow work. It’s a residence permit, not a work permit. To take a job in Indonesia, your spouse needs their own work permit and E23 work KITAS through an employer — its own application, its own sponsorship. The two permits can run alongside each other in the same family if both are needed.

Who sponsors the spouse KITAS
The spouse KITAS is tied to the principal permit. The same sponsor that stands behind your KITAS — your employer, your own PT PMA if you hold an Investor KITAS, or Emerhub where we act as your Employer of Record — files the application for your spouse. The two permits stay linked: if your KITAS ends or changes sponsor, the spouse permit is affected the same way.
Since late 2025, holders of the E33G remote worker permit can also bring dependents on this basis. That change closed the one gap that used to leave nomad families on tourist visas.

- Your spouse’s passport, valid for at least six months, with two blank pages.
- A recent color photograph.
- A bank statement showing at least USD 2,000.
- Your marriage certificate, with a sworn translation into Indonesian or English where it’s in another language.
- A copy of your own KITAS or KITAP.
- The guarantee from your sponsor.

What is the E31B spouse KITAS?

What if I’m married to an Indonesian citizen?
Then the visa is the E31A, sponsored by your Indonesian spouse rather than a company. It’s valid for 1 or 2 years, and after two years of marriage you can move to a spouse KITAP for permanent residence.
Can I bring my children too?
Yes. Children under 18 and unmarried come in under the E31E dependent index, on the same sponsor and the same validity as your permit. We file the family together.
Which KITAS holders can sponsor a spouse?
Holders of the main long-stay permits — work, investor, and since late 2025 the E33G remote worker permit — can bring a spouse under the E31B. The application is filed by the sponsor behind the principal permit.
Does my marriage certificate need translating?
Yes, unless it’s already in Indonesian or English. It needs a sworn translation, and certificates issued abroad usually need legalization as well. This is the document that most often holds up a family application, so we check it first.
